Quiet Friends

Structures_coverThirty years ago, Steve Roach released the pivotal Structures from Silence–a work that deeply influenced and inspired electronic and minimalist music that followed. To honor Steve Roach’s work, and to highlight artists who have carried this influence forward, Free Floating released a 30th anniversary tribute called Quiet Friends: A 30th Anniversary Tribute to Steve Roach’s Structures From Silence. This week we’ll hear one of the tracks from Roach’s original release, and the 30th anniversary tribute in its entirety. Free Floating’s founder, Brad Ross-MacLeod, also weighs in on hearing Structures from Silence for the first time and how this release came about.

“Quiet Friend” – Steve Roach – Structures from Silence (1984)

Interview with Brad Ross-McLeod

Unlike many “tribute” releases, these artists go far beyond merely covering the original work; this is, instead, a brilliant homage–a tribute in the real sense–to Roach’s groundbreaking music from the voices of ambient artists whose works have been influenced and inspired by Structures From Silence. It is a marvelous achievement, and a must-have for every ambient music enthusiast.
